Dear Friend,
We are grateful to God for His wisdom and direction in the design and formation of “Grace Bible Church” of Rocky Mount, Va., as many years and prayers have gone into it. We thank the Lord for the insights and the direction that He has given, especially as we seek to live for Jesus Christ, to obey His Word, and develop a family-centered fellowship in the culture in which we live.
As we have received Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, and have desired to grow in our Christian faith, we have learned the importance of being involved in a good Bible believing Church made up of other believers who are committed to His Word for personal accountability.
Those of us who are married, and have been blessed with children, are even more aware of how important this fellowship is. For we live in a culture that has rejected God’s truth and is seeking to live independent of His much needed wisdom and principles. The clear warnings of Scripture are being ignored and we are experiencing more and more of God’s judgments in our society.
Day by day we are watching the American family crumble before our eyes. The very institution of marriage is under attack with a fifty percent divorce rate and even attempts to redefine what constitutes a marriage. Women are leaving the home and getting out from under the protection of their husbands and seeking their own career, all at the cost of their children. Abortion is at an all time high along with youth rebellion, unfaithful husbands, lack of character in the work place. We are being flooded as a society with a deluge of immoral TV programs, videos / dvd’s, and the ever luring temptations accompanied with the World Wide Web.
But the greatest question is, “Where is the Church in all this societal collapse?” Where are all the watchmen on the walls to warn the city? Through the years I have heard the concerns of many of God’s people. And the answer has been given by many church leaders, that if we are going to reach this wayward world for Christ, we are going to have to get down on their level, and adapt our worship and our ways to make it more appealing and “seeker friendly.” Now many of our own people are experiencing the same reproofs of life.
God once said of His own people; “They have sown to the wind and have reaped the whirlwind.”
The church now struggles with a high divorce rate; fragmented families, rebellious youth, and more and more Christian women have left the home in pursuit of a career, to find their own identity and purpose in life and/or because of the pressure to supplement the income. And the question becomes, “Who is raising the children?”
Many of God’s people are singing how Jesus sets them free, while secretly being defeated morally in their thought life or struggle with habits they can’t brake or are committing more and more time to their work in the pursuit of enlarging their financial borders, hoping all the while that God’s hand is upon them. Some have thrown up their hands and said, “I give up, it doesn’t work for me.” Others are told they just need to praise God more and it doesn’t mater how, “ just be sincere”. But Proverbs 14:12 tells us, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” The latest reproof to the misguided ways of the Church, is the breaking up of the family unit by its well-meaning programs. In many Churches a family doesn’t even worship together. Each one has the choice between traditional, contemporary, children’s church, or whatever worship suits them. We believe God intended families to worship together. God’s answer for the world and His Church is the same as it has been from the garden until now. Jesus prayed to the Father in John 17, “Sanctify them in the truth; Thy word is truth.” We call it getting back to the basics of God’s Word and ways.
The Bible teaches us that God is the Creator of all things and everything has a design and a purpose. He has clearly laid out in His Word the principles for every issue that the world is struggling with. God has also given us His clear design for the Church, what its purpose is and how it is to be set up and governed.
It is God who set up the family structure with the husband being the head of the home as Christ is the head of the Church, with wives in submission to their husbands, and children obedient to their parents. Then the husband and wife are to work together in a spirit of oneness, to develop Christ like character in their sons and daughters. The Bible also teaches us how God has a specific design and purpose for our sons and daughters which will best prepare them for their role in life. Not one being superior to the other, just different. God promises us His peace and success when we follow His ways. For God has told us in His Word, “My ways are higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.”
The desire of this ministry is to reinforce God’s ways as they are taught in the Bible. It is also our desire to train up the people of God in three key areas:
1.To have a heart that seeks after God: We believe that God has given each one who professes to be a child of God the responsibility to study the Word of God and seek to apply it to their life.
I Peter 2:2, “Like newborn babes, long for the pure milk of the word, that by if you may grow in respect to salvation.”
Col 3:16, “Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms [and] hymns [and] spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”
Ps 119:10, “With all my heart I have sought Thee; Do not let me wander from Thy commandments.”
It is our burden to help the people of God to walk in the light of His Word, and to experience the liberating power of the truth.
Jesus said in John 8:31-32, "If you abide in My Word, [then] you are truly disciples of Mine; and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
2.To build strong marriages: As we help to build marriage oneness between a husband and wife, we are not only building a strong and lasting marriage, but a secure foundation for training our children in God’s ways.
Eph 5:33, “Nevertheless let each individual among you also love his own wife even as himself; and [let] the wife [see to it] that she respect her husband.”
3.Turning the hearts of the fathers back to the sons:
Ps 127:3-5, “Behold, children are a gift of the LORD; the fruit of the womb is a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one's youth. How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them; they shall not be ashamed, When they speak with their enemies in the gate.”
We believe that children are a special gift from God, and that God has given the primary responsibility to the parents to train up their children. The Church was designed to be a support to the father and mother. For many years, the Church, seeking to help the families, has taken over much of the training of the children through Sunday school and youth programs. Now many parents don’t know how to meet the spiritual needs of their sons and daughters and feel that their pastor, elders, or youth leaders are the only ones equipped to train them. They are led to believe, that youth relate better to their peers or a youth leader, rather than to the wisdom and protection of their own godly parents…those who love and know them best. God tells us in His Word that the father is the main teacher in the home with the help of the mother.
Deut 6:7, “And you shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.”
We believe that the home provides the best structure for this to take place.
This Church ministry seeks to reinforce these three areas with four key foundational principles found in Acts 2:42 “And they were continually devoting themselves to the Apostles teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” These principles made the early Church spiritually strong, fruitful, and able to stand for Christ in the midst of great persecution.
We are excited to see real family unity taking place in each of our church families. And we look forward to the fruit of God’s truths in our lives, in our children, and in the generations to come. What a joy! We thank the Lord for His wonderful blessings as we seek to live according to His ways.
Elder Pastor,
Greg Enquist
